Shark Information
|
The following are some of the muscles in a shark:
Dorsal Longitudinal Bundles- helps move the shark sideways and up and down. Ventral Longitudinal Bundles- moves the shark forward. Lateral Longitudinal Bundles- aids in this movement Myotomes- a group of muscles Adductor Mandibulae- The main muscle used for opening an closing the jaw. Intermandibulae- Assists in this closing and opening of the jaw. Levator of Fin- Helps lift the fin. Depressor of Fin- Helps lower the fin. A Shark has two types of muscles: Red muscles and White muscles. 1.Red muscle is aerobic: it needs oxygen in order to work. This muscle contains myoglobin, which is an oxygen-carrying pigment. Red muscle is used for when a shark is in cruising speed. 2.White muscle is anaerobic: it does not need oxygen. White muscle helps when a shark needs a sudden burst of speed. Here is a shark showing off its muscular system.
